Meet Mira Tanna
Priorities
One of Mira’s priorities will be to make our community more walkable, bikeable and transit-friendly, while reducing traffic congestion and spurring economic development. As a public transit user, Mira takes the Lynx bus to City Hall for work each day, and knows how to improve our transit system and make our neighborhoods safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Mira will bring her background in civil rights and library services to make sure that local government is accessible, responsive and effective for all Orlando residents.
Family
The daughter of immigrants from India and the Netherlands, Mira was raised in Iowa, and graduated from Washington University in Saint Louis. She is the mother of two college-age children who attended OCPS schools. She and her husband, a UCF professor, have lived in the Rosemont neighborhood since 2011.
Public Service
From housing affordability to creating thriving business districts, the challenges facing District 3 residents are complex. As a City of Orlando public servant for the past six years, Mira knows how local government works and is ready to tackle Orlando’s biggest needs to improve District 3 for all of our residents. In her role as the city’s Grants Manager, she has helped secure millions of dollars to improve our water quality, make our schools safer, protect our communities from natural disasters, and increase access to fresh produce.
Leadership
Mira is the clerk of Quakers of Orlando, a faith community located in the Park Lake / Highland neighborhood. A longtime member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Mira has served on the board of a Nobel-laureate Quaker organization. She has served our local community as Chair of the Orange County Local Mitigation Strategy Working Group, President of the Central Florida Grant Professionals Association, and a member of the Orange County Disabilities Advisory Board. Mira has volunteered as a visitor for individuals who are incarcerated and as a sexual assault counselor.
